01 — The problem
Corporate climate claims are almost impossible to verify or compare
Problem 01
Everything is self-declared
Every Big Tech company has a net zero pledge. None have had their long-term pledges independently validated. "Net zero by 2030" and "net zero by 2030 (SBTi certified)" look identical in a press release — but they are not the same thing.
Problem 02
No standard basis for comparison
Every company uses different scopes, base years, accounting methods, and offset strategies. Without a consistent framework, any comparison across companies produces a meaningless number.
Problem 03
The picture changes between reports
Microsoft paused all carbon removal purchases in April 2026. Google removed its 2030 pledge from its website in June 2025. None of this appears in any sustainability report — it requires active monitoring.
02 — What I built
The methodology is expert-designed — execution runs at AI scale
At BCG, our climate practice spent 20+ minutes per company manually verifying these claims — pulling SBTi data, cross-checking report figures, assessing trajectory against IEA pathways, reconciling Scope 3 categories. The methodology behind True Zero is built on that same domain knowledge. AI automates the extraction, validation, and review pipeline — the analytical framework and judgment criteria are expert-designed. This is climate expertise scaled with tooling, not a generic AI scraper.
🧠
Expert-designed methodology
Every KPI, rating rule, and flag was designed from climate domain knowledge — SBTi criteria, GHG Protocol, IEA NZE pathways. The framework tells AI what to look for and how to judge it.

6-agent AI review pipeline
Every benchmark passes through six specialist agents before it's final — each catching a different class of error.

Analyst voice — not a data dump
Good/Bad/Ugly per company. Specific, sourced, non-diplomatic. An action line per company naming the right engagement mechanism — shareholder resolution, RFP clause, investment screen.
📡
Post-report monitoring
Material events after the report date update the analyst assessment, with a threshold for what counts as material vs. noise — a judgment call the methodology defines explicitly.

03 — Quality control
No benchmark ships without passing six specialist AI review agents
Agent 01
SBTi Technical Reviewer
Verifies every SBTi field against the Target Dashboard — status labels, temperature classification, the 90/10 rule.
Agent 02
Corporate Climate Policy Expert
Checks methodology consistency, rating calibration, and whether IEA alignment assessments are substantiated.
Agent 03
CSO Agent
One per company. Finds factual errors and mischaracterized commitments — not tasked to soften language.
Agent 04
Writing Reviewer
Flags vague and diplomatic language — every action line must be a concrete recommendation, not a generic suggestion.
Agent 05
Peer Comparator
Reads all action lines together — flags any recommendation that could transfer to a different company.
Agent 06
Disclosure Consistency
Catches fields that are individually valid but collectively contradictory — e.g. a published transition plan with zero capex alignment.

Alphabet
✓ SBTi 1.5°C
GoodAlphabet pioneered 24/7 hourly-matched CFE procurement — a methodology Microsoft has since adopted and that is rapidly becoming the industry standard for large tech buyers.
BadPer Google's own Environmental Report, total GHG rose 51% between 2019 and 2024 — for a company with SBTi-validated near-term targets, this is not a footnote. It is a fundamental contradiction at the center of their climate position.
UglyAlphabet reports market-based Scope 2 as zero, but location-based is 9.8 MtCO₂e. The company that invented 24/7 CFE as the rigorous standard simultaneously claims Scope 2 neutrality via the legacy REC methodology it spent a decade arguing is insufficient.
File a shareholder resolution as a climate risk governance matter — request board-level disclosure of how validated 1.5°C targets reconcile with a 51% absolute emissions increase. The governance framing has SEC precedent and withstands the ordinary business exception.
Amazon
✗ SBTi Removed
GoodThe Rivian EV order — 100,000 vehicles — is the only confirmed capital commitment tied to a specific asset purchase rather than a procurement target.
BadSubmitted an SBTi commitment letter but never filed targets for validation — SBTi removed the commitment after 24 months. No externally validated near-term target exists.
UglyAbsolute Scope 1+2 emissions were higher in 2023 than in 2019, despite Amazon being the world's largest corporate renewable energy buyer by capacity.
Apply a full disclosure discount. Amazon's board opposed a shareholder climate disclosure proposal in April 2026 — engagement without coordinated institutional backing is unlikely to succeed.

09 — What the data shows
Three risks are hiding in plain sight across this peer group
1
AI buildout is the central tension — and no one has a credible answer
Every company in this peer group set targets before large-scale AI deployment reshaped their energy and capital footprint. Google's total GHG is now 51% above its 2019 baseline. Microsoft's Scope 3 rose 39% between 2020 and 2024. The emissions trend and the target timeline are structurally misaligned for all five.
2
REC-based Scope 2 is about to be a problem for the whole peer group
All five companies report market-based Scope 2 at zero via renewable energy certificates. The GHG Protocol is revising its Scope 2 guidance toward temporal and geographic matching. Any investment screen built on current market-based figures should treat them as provisional.
3
Climate language is softening — quietly, across the board
Google removed its 2030 net-zero pledge from its website (June 2025). Microsoft's blog said "the moon has gotten further away." Meta shifted from "commits to" to "has set a goal." These are not typos. A peer-group-wide recalibration of what companies are willing to put in print is underway.
